Getting to Know You: Meet Spencer
Every once in a while, we’d like to take a moment to spotlight some of our staff and volunteers who help make Family Camp happen, giving you a deeper glimpse into the people who are loving on your and your family while you’re with us.
Spencer “Turkey” Newsom is one these great people. You’ll most likely see him hanging out with your kids, playing games, making them smile, and just loving on them. Today he’s stopping by to tell us a little bit more about himself.
Tell me a little bit about yourself: your interests, what you’re currently up to, where you’re headed next.
Welp I am Spencer Newsom (also known at camp as turkey). I love being out at camp. It’s hands down my favorite place in the world. I’m currently still in school and working at an after school program in Temple,Texas. I honestly have no idea where I am heading next, as I’m sure the majority of college students do, but I suppose wherever the good Lord takes me.
Why do you enjoy working at Family Camp and how long have you been working there?
My favorite part about working LLFC is getting to know the staff better and reuniting with staff that I worked with over the summer. I also love getting to see the families grow in their relationships with each other, and I love getting to see the same families when they come back. I’ve been doing family camps since May of 2010. I also work at the youth camp in the summer, and I’ve been there since the summer of ’09.
What have you personally taken away from working at Family Camp?
I have learned to put myself in the rear view mirror when it comes to God and to remember that He comes first. It’s a blessing to get to come out to camp and help families not have to worry about doing dishes or cooking, etc.
What’s one of your favorite family camp memories?
Whoo man that’s tough. There’s never really a dull moment at family camp, but I really like when some of the staff and parents come together to play ultimate (frisbee). It’s a great bonding experience.
