Guest Post: A Family Tradition

Lee and Jennifer Mayo are Family Camp veterans. They enthusiastically agreed to share with you today why Family Camp is so important to them.

Going to Family Camp is our family’s favorite thing to do together. We all look forward to it for the whole year and our daughters (Holly, 6 and Allee, 4) constantly ask, “When are we going back to camp and drive in the river?”

When we found out that Laity Lodge was bringing back Family Camp, we signed up immediately. It had been eight years since we had been in the canyon, and being back and introducing this little piece of heaven to our daughters was an awesome feeling. We’ve now been four times – twice in the fall and twice in the spring – and each time is better than the last. We’ve enjoyed being there to both experience the cooler weather and participate in the warmer weather activities. We’re still trying to decide when will be best for next time!

The best part of FC is just being together without the distracting responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and planning daily activities. Being relaxed at family camp is so easy because the hospitality is outstanding, the food is first-class, and the counselors are fun and more than willing to play with our children. We usually try to come up with a big list of everything we want to do with our time: swimming, canoeing, walking in the river, riding bikes, crafts, tennis and hiking. We like to take advantage of all the activity/free time! The girls love to fish with their daddy, spending time doing one of his favorite pastimes, and he is proud to brag on them. Round-up is part of our family vocabulary, and we often talk about silly counselors, funny skits, and sing camp worship songs at home.

Being at camp reinforces our desire to raise our girls to glorify Christ, and we are given tools to make our time as a family significant. When we come home and talk about our time at camp to friends, we find that it is hard to fully describe the experience. We just know that God’s hand is on this place and this ministry, and we feel blessed to be a part of it.
