Getting to Know You: Meet Kelsey

Every once in a while, we’d like to take a moment to spotlight some of our staff and volunteers who help make Family Camp happen, giving you a deeper glimpse into the people who are loving on your and your family while you’re with us.

Tell me a little bit about yourself: your interests, what you’re currently up to, where you’re headed next.
My name is Kelsey Broussard, but at camp everyone knows me as “Bubblegum” because of my pink hair, a tradition that started my first year as a counselor. I have absolutely loved having pink hair, and if my roots wouldn’t grow out brown, I would be tempted to have it all year :) I’m currently a student at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and I love LOVE going to school there. I have about 3 more semesters left, and my major is Performance Studies (acting, communication, and theater all rolled together essentially) with a theater and English minor. I have worked several jobs year-round to help pay for school, but my favorite and most consistent job has been babysitting for my pastor’s two boys Caleb and Colton. They are the loves of my life and often times a reminder of how to have child-like faith. I would love to be an English, Speech, and Theater teacher, but I also have a secret ambition to be a diesel mechanic, as well as a massage therapist. In all honestly I just want to conquer the world!

Why do you enjoy working at Family Camp and how long have you been working there?
I have been working with Laity Lodge Youth Camp for four years now. I was on work crew at Singing Hills, then a counselor for the past two years, and this year I am serving as a Program Director! I have worked a few Family Camps, and what keeps me coming back is looking forward to seeing the kids each year. There aren’t enough words to explain the joy I get out of seeing a former camper and hearing how much they love coming to camp. It is the most affirming thing for me!

What have you personally taken away from working at Family Camp?
I have learned from Family Camp just how important it is to love God ardently as a family. When I come to family camp, my heart melts when I watch how the dad will “rough-house” with their little boys and then turn around and let their little girls paint their toenails. It gives me hope and direction as a person who longs to raise her family in the love of the Lord. It reminds a great deal of how I see my boyfriend leading our family someday. I love how the kids will come running to their mother when they haven’t seen her in a while, and I imaging my kids missing me that badly someday too. I get a lot of encouragement and joy from watching the families and how they relate to their friends and other family members. It is such a blessing to be a part of that!

What’s one of your favorite family camp memories?
My favorite camp moment was being “Coach Susan” and teaching the families how to do Tai Chi…HILARIOUS, and they loved it!

We’d love for you to come out to camp and meet Kelsey yourself! Check out the upcoming dates, and we’ll see you then!
